Hi, Metacreations sold Painter (all Painter products) to Corel in Spring 2000, so Corel would be the appropriate company in this case. Even if you could find a trial version of Painter 6, it wouldn’t do you any good.
You already have Painter 6 and that’s what you need to get working properly. My system specs are: Pentium 4 2.53 GHz 512 MB RAM WinXP Home SP2 I have Painter 6.1 installed, running in Compatibility Mode with Windows 98/Windows ME. (There’s no option to run it in Compatibility Mode with Windows 98/Windows 2000). The most obvious difference between our systems is that you have more RAM. Painter 6 and earlier versions were developed before there was more than 512 MB of RAM available and the programs don’t “understand” more than 512 MB of RAM. Thus the only error message Painter knew to give you was that you didn’t have enough memory available to run the program.
According to Corel’s Knowledge Base, this problem was addressed in the Painter 6.0.3 patch. However, since there is a later patch the one you’d need to install is the Painter 6.1 patch.

The Painter 6.1 patch is available to download at: You’ll need to Uninstall Painter 6, reinstall Painter 6, and install the Painter 6.1 patch following these steps exactly, to help prevent problems: To Uninstall Painter 6, reinstall Painter 6 and the 6.1 patch, and create a backup copy of the Painter 6 default files: • Move any files you created to a folder outside of the main Painter 6 folders.
• Uninstall Painter 6. • Manually delete any remaining Painter 6 installed folders and files. • Install Painter 6, then immediately install the Painter 6.1 patch (without opening Painter 6 even one time).
• Before launching Painter even one time, create a new folder outside of the Painter 6 folders and name it something like “Painter 6 Default Files Backup”. • Go to the main Painter 6 folder and copy all of the default Painter 6 files. • Go to the “Painter 6 Default Files Backup” folder and paste the copied default Painter 6 files into it. Now you have a backup set of Painter 6 default files so when one of them becomes corrupted, which happens on occasion, with Painter closed go to the “Painter 6 Default Files Backup” folder, make a copy of the appropriate file, then go to the main Painter 6 folder and paste the copied file into it.
This will save your having to Uninstall and reinstall Painter 6 and the 6.1 patch again if a file becomes corrupted and save frustration, too! If that doesn’t solve the problem, you may need to reduce your Virtual Memory too, but I think it should work, so try the above, then let us know how it goes.

The tips have been gathered from the Painter newsgroup and other forums around the Painter community over the past few years: Here are a couple of suggestions you might try: Use Start > Control Panel > System > Advanced tab > Performance area > Settings button > Advanced tab > Virtual Memory area > Change button (or however it’s set up on XP Pro I’m using XP Home) Then, some Painter users say to set the Virtual Memory to 512Mb and restart your system.
Or Another Painter user explains that older version of Painter had trouble with over.5GB RAM, though he says he ran 6.1 on his 768MB system for a while with no problems. He suggests lowering the virtual memory setting to less than 2GB total (virtual plus real) RAM. And I have my Virtual Memory set to 768 MB and Painter 5.0.3, Painter 6.1, Painter 7.1.357, and Painter 8.1 are running just fine. Also I’m running both Painter 5.0.3 and Painter 6.1 on WinXP Home in compatibility mode with Windows 98/Windows ME without any problems. I was using a Samtron and had my res set at 1152x768 and it was ok. I increased my res to 1280by1024 and it Painter 6 was not longer aligned properly. Then I swapped out my Samtron monitor with a Viewsonic and I can run at 1280by1024 and Painter 6 works fine. So try messing with your screen res and see if that makes a difference.
