An enigmatic adaptation of Pushkin's novel that strips the story to its bare bones, removing the poetry and author's narrative presence, to focus solely on the ennui and detachment of the titular Russian aristocrat that ultimately and satisfactorily pervades the entire film. Martha Fiennes debut sees her cast her brother in the lead role (she also assigns the score to her other sibling, Magnus) It's an astute move, as he can play this kind of wounded, bitter and cruel mouthed malcontent in his sleep. Liv Tyler was perhaps a surprising choice to play the object of his affection and obsession, the quiet country girl turned noblesse, Tatyana, yet it's a performance of slow burning and hidden depths delight. Had to watch this for a class and just finished reading Eugene Onegin yesterday. What I got from the book and it's lasting impact on Russian literature was that it created two new characters within a story that had great command of the Russian language.

Anything that could come close to a good adaptation would at least have the film making to match, but this is Martha Fiennes' first outing. It has the looks of a good costume drama, but even when the story is put solely on that drama, things don't connect. I liked the acting, but I don't see anything to return to. Movie 1 out of 3 of my preparation for my one-hour Russian presentation about Alexander Pushkin. Partially in Russian. The movie compresses the first two main events to almost the same day (the novel's three scenes being: Onegin/Tatyana's first love arc, the duel and Onegin/Tatyana's second arc).

No problem with that, as it speeds up the pace of the story (contrary to the existentialist digressions throughout the stanzas). The core of the emotional effect is very well adapted to the screen. The little rant during the pre-duel with Lensky's second was odd. Felt like a scene or two were omitted; the servant had a significant role in the verse-novel. Beautiful scenery, and I loved the British touch the film had, compared to the verse-novel, which almost felt like French post-modernism, while it was the inception of Russian Romanticism. Why do I know all this?

Am I in need of a hobby, or is this precisely my hobby? For her debut film, Martha Fiennes chose to adapt for the screen one of the foundational texts of Russian literature (and identity): Onegin, Pushkin's novel in verse. Onegin is a young aristocrat tired of Petersburg who is called to the deathbed of an old uncle. He travels to the dying man's property in southern Russia, where he meets Vladimir Lensky, a passionate young poet, and Tatiana Larina (the elder sister of Lensky's betrothed). The film follows rather faithfully the novel's chronological narration (despite some rather forgivable cuts), but Fiennes' Onegin is all plot and no Pushkin, as it largely loses the cultural references that position the original book in its time and place.

While this makes for an easier experience.
